🌄2024 BIG IDEA COMPETITION OVERVIEW

The UTRGV Center for Innovation & Commercialization, a division of the Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship, is excited to hold its fourth annual Big Idea Competition this fall. This in-person competition is open to all UTRGV students. Winners will be determined by a pool of experienced entrepreneurs and business professionals. 

Contest Rules

An idea may be submitted by an individual or by a team consisting of UTRGV students. 

ALL entries must be ideas, and not a developed business. As such, an idea that already has a functioning business associated with it will not be accepted. Specifically, the idea:

Cannot be currently generating revenue Cannot already have received funding or financing of any form Cannot have any legal form of incorporation

🏆PRIZES

    • 1st Place -  $5,000
    • 2nd Place - $3,500
    • 3rd Place -  $2,000

    • be a founder/co-founder (i.e., the person with the original idea) 
    • be in the earliest stages - have an idea or have just started building on an idea 
    • create a profile on StartupTree and apply as an individual or in teams of 2

STUDENT CATEGORY 

🌄OVERVIEW

The Big Idea Competition offers students a platform to develop and showcase their early-stage ideas. Beyond just presenting their concepts, participants will become familiar with the Center for Innovation and Commercialization, receiving valuable support and resources to advance their entrepreneurial ventures.

This in-person event is hosted by the UTRGV Center for Innovation & Commercialization.

The winner of the student special categories will take home $3,000. 

👤ELIGIBILITY

The applicant must...

    • be a current student (undergraduate or graduate-level) ​ 
    • be a founder/co-founder (i.e., the person with the original idea) 
    • be in the earliest stages - have an idea or have just started building on an idea 
    • create a profile on StartupTree and apply as an individual or in teams of  2​

    • Thursday, August 1 via Startup Tree
  • Information Session #1 
    • Tuesday, September 10 at 1:00 pm via Zoom  
  • Information Session #2
    • Tuesday, September 17 at 1:00 pm via Zoom
  • Information Session #3
    • Tuesday, September 24 at 1:00 pm via Zoom
  • Application Deadline
    • All applications must be submitted by noon on Friday, October 18  
  •  Reviewing Period
    • Applicants will be evaluated and scored between Friday, October 18 and Friday, November 1  
  • Finalist Selection
    • All finalists will be notified via email by Monday, November 4 by 5:00 PM
  • Finalist Information Session and Mentor Meet & Greet
    • Friday, November 8 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm at the UTRGV Center for Innovation & Commercialization
  • Mock Pitches
    • Finalists will have an opportunity to book one-on-one meetings with the CIC team to rehearse and refine their pitches and slide decks on Friday, November 15.
  • Big Idea Competition In-Person Finale 
    • Friday, November 22
    • Time: 12:00 – 5:00 pm  
    • Each finalist will be given 5 minutes to present their idea, followed by 3 minutes of Q&A with an audience of peers, UTRGV employees, and distinguished guests.
    • Finalists will be judged by a group of entrepreneurs, innovators, and change-makers whose experience spans both social and traditional enterprises.

📝THE FINE PRINT - Tax Liability Disclosure 

All payments, including prizes, gift cards, awards, or items of monetary value, are taxable income to the recipient and will be subject to all applicable federal and state tax withholding and reporting regulations in accordance with the Internal Revenue Service. By accepting this prize, gift card, award, or item, you understand that if the recipient is:

A UTRGV employee, taxes will be collected on the next available payroll cycle. An international individual, 30% tax will be deducted upfront through Accounts Payable.  A UTRGV student or Non-UTRGV community (U.S. Citizen/U.S. Permanent Resident), the prize value will be subject to 1099-MISC reporting guidelines. 

For payment tax assessment, if you are NOT a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent resident, please furnish a completed Form W-8BEN to the department distributing this prize, gift card, award, or item of value. Departments will be responsible for submitting the corresponding requisition number and completed Form W-8BEN to tax.compliance@utrgv.edu prior to distributing the prize, gift card, award, or item of value. Please be advised that additional information may be required from you to determine your U.S. tax residency status, tax withholding, and reporting requirements.   

* Per Internal Revenue Code Section 1441, all payments made to, or on behalf of, a nonresident/international individual are subject to 30% federal income tax withholding, unless an exemption applies. Tax Compliance Team will review and will advise of any tax exemptions.
