NDLW - This and That: Two Ideas for Increasing Student Engagement in both Sync and Async Online Classes

Presenter: Dr. Art Brownlow

This presentation will feature two distinct strategies designed to engage students in the online environment, one with asynchronous courses in mind and another that works well in synchronous class sessions.

The first will examine low-stakes, formative assessments which students must complete and yet require no grading by the instructor. Attendees will be shown a workflow within the SoftChalk platform that establishes a “pedagogical pathway” through which students must proceed, and which will require them to engage in both course content and assessments.

The second strategy will explore the use of mobile technology to engage students in problem- and team-based learning during synchronous video-conferencing sessions. This strategy also involves team presentation and instructor coaching.
