Continuing Education: Pharmacy Technician Program - Brownsville

This comprehensive program will prepare participants to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and take the PTCB's Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, pharmacy history, pharmacy practice in diverse environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic techniques, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement. The need for Pharmacy Technicians continues to grow with demand expected to increase substantially in the upcoming years. Technicians work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies, and other healthcare settings. The high demand for pharmacy technicians is the result of a multitude of factors including the constant availability of new drugs, the national shortage of registered pharmacists, the establishment of certified pharmacy technicians, and an aging population.
