UTRGV's Gender and Women's Studies Program is proud to present Dr. Nicholas L. Syrett (University of Kansas). His talk focuses on the work of antebellum women's rights activist Elizabeth Oakes Smith to demonstrate how age and marriage law intersected in the 19th century (and beyond) to construct gendered legal identities for women that denied them autonomy and any sort of meaningful adulthood.
This talk is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
